Why is an Exercise Bike so good for you??

With any form of Cycling you are using the biggest muscles in your body, your legs and your back side. Therefore your heart rate is easily increased as it increases the blood flow to these muscle groups. Using an Exercise Bike is also providing movement to your Hips, Knees and Ankles and therefore increasing the strength and flexibility of these joints. As the old adage goes- use it or loose it. Just 15minutes a day of cycling on a Fitness Exercise Bike in the comfort of your own home can dramatically increase your Cardio Fitness, Flexibility and overall Strength.

Exercise bikes have been used for fitness for many generations. For many years Exercise Bikes where the only type of cardio Fitness Equipment you could purchase.

Exercise Bikes are still as popular as ever and have many new styles and features to help you stay fit.

As a basic guide you can narrow the range of Exercise Bikes into the following Categories

Upright Magnetic Resistance Exercise Bikes

This is the most popular form of Exercise Bike and needs little explanation.

Recumbent Magnetic resistance Exercise Bikes

A Recumbent Exercise Bike has a seat with a back and a bottom similar to an office chair. Seat discomfort is the most common complaint with the traditional styles of Upright Exercise Bikes.Recumbent Exercise Bikes are less common, but fantastically comfortable. In fact I believe it is the most comfortable form of Cardio Exercise possible. One of its many advantages are the supportive nature of the seat which lends its self well to rehabilitation and the elderly. Don't be fooled though, just because you are sitting so comfortably does not mean that you can't achieve a serious Cardio Workout using a Recumbent Exercsie Bike.

Spin Exercise Bikes

Spin Exercise Bikes or Spin Cycles were designed to give the closest possible feeling and experience to riding a road bike. This is achieved by having a very heavy fly wheel. Just like on a road bike, a Spin Cycle takes a fair amount of effort to get going but once moving you have a smooth continuous motion. Spin Exercise Bikes or Spin Cycles are used extensively in Health Clubs, Fitness Centres and Gyms due to this feature and because they are a fantastic way to improve you overall fitness and endurance.

Resistance

There are three main styles of resistance used in today's exercise bikes

Permanent Magnetic Resistance

Permanent magnetic resistance is a system of permanent magnets that are moved closer to and further from the steel fly wheel, thus creating resistance. This is a very simple and reliable system for generating resistance without the wear and tear of rubbing parts or friction resistance.Permanent magnetic resistance is the most widely used form of resistance in Exercise Bikes, Recumbent Bikes and Cross Trainers.

Electromagnetic Resistance/ Self Generating

Electromagnetic resistance is achieved by varying current through an electro magnet. The magnet is also placed close the steel flywheel and as the current is increased, so to does the resistance. The advantage of this system is potentially stronger resistance and more levels of resistance. Often the electro magnetic style of resistance is combined with a power generator which will generate the additional power required to run the other electronic features of the Exercise Bike.

Personally, history has proved this system to have a much higher failure and fault rate and is more expensive to repair. All this for what amounts to very little additional benefit over the permanent magnet style of resistance

Friction Resistance.

This type of resistance is used only on spin cycles or very low-end Exercise Bikes that I would recommend staying away from.

Using Friction Resistance on a Spin Exercise Bike or Spin Cycle it is perfectly suitable, although today, we are seeing magnetic resistance being used in Spin Exercise Bikes or Spin Bikes more often.

For my money, although I would prefer magnetic resistance on a Spin Exercise Bike, what is most important if the overall feel and smoothness of the motion.

On of the best things about the latest styles of Exercise Bikes is, that the magnetic resistance is virtually silent, so its perfect for use in the lounge room while you are watching you favourite TV show or early in the morning so you don't wake the whole house up.
